Not Alabama related, but this could be a blow to Arkansas.

Quote:
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas guard Patrick Beverley won't play for the Razorbacks this season, the school said Friday.

A news release from the Arkansas athletic department said: "junior guard Patrick Beverley will not compete for the Razorbacks in the 2008-09 basketball season" and offered no further details.

The 6-foot-1 Beverley started 33 games last season, averaging 12.1 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds.

He certainly has coaused us enough misery in his first two years. The Hogs already had some serious losses from last year's team to deal with.

Maybe more than everyone wants to know about this

http://www.wholehogsports.com/nwat/67945/

They now have only ten scholarship players, and only three of them saw action last year. Leading returning scorer 5.3/g, leading returning rebounder 3.9/g. They are bringing in a good recruiting class, though generally considered not as good as ours.

The Hogs got a sigh of relief when they learned that Courtney Fortson has been declared eligible by the NCAA clearing house. They are still waiting to hear on another newcomer, 4 star recruit Jason Henry from Memphis. This could be a pretty hard year for them.

Report: Beverley violated NCAA rules

Patrick Beverley left the Razorbacks basketball team on Aug. 8, and reports had attributed his departure to academic issues. Well, Beverley, who plans to go overseas and seek a professional playing career, says it wasn’t an academic issue, according to FOXSports.com’s Jeff Goodman.

Here’s more from Beverley from Goodman’s blog:

“It had nothing to do with academics,” Beverley said. “I violated NCAA rules and what happened went over the coaches’ heads. A lot of people thought it was because of grades, but I go to class every day.”

“I’m going overseas for a year and hopefully I’ll be able to come back and get picked in the draft,” Beverley said. “This was hard because I was working out with the team every day and getting ready for the season.”

Violations or not, Beverley’s departure is bad news for the Hogs, who now must replace seven lettermen. Beverley’s name remains on the Razorbacks’ 2008-09 roster on the athletic department’s Web site, however. There is the possibility Beverley could redshirt a year and return in the 2009-10 season, but that doesn’t seem likely.
Here’s an explanation of why Beverley remains on the roster from an Aug. 10 article in the Democrat-Gazette:

It’s not an oversight that Beverley’s name remains on the roster, said Kevin Trainor, Arkansas associate athletic director for media relations and communications. But Trainor offered no other comments regarding Beverley’s status with the team.

Off-the-court drama involving Beverley is nothing new. In April, reports surfaced that Beverley wanted to transfer to the University of South Florida, where his former UA coach Stan Heath now coaches. Beverley was talked out of transferring by his mother and decided to stay at the University of Arkansas.

I spoke with Beverley last April, when he wouldn’t comment on status messages he put on his Facebook profile that seemed to hint toward an impending transfer.

http://www.fayettevilleflyer.com/2008/08/19/dude-patrick-beverley-wtf/

This is getting downright strange.

Quote:
OK so some of you non-sports-fans are probably sick of hearing about Patrick Beverley. Guess what? Us too! And it’s not because we don’t want to see him hoopin’ all over dudes across the SEC in a Razorback jersey either.

We’re sick of hearing about it because as clearly as we read the words, “will not compete for the Razorbacks in the 2008-09 season,” ole Beverley keeps stringing us out further and further. And he just won’t let go of the hook.

We want so desperately to believe that Patrick stands a chance of playing ball for the Hogs this season but something in the back of our minds is telling us there’s just no hope. Still, however, there’s so much damned drama.

To catch us all up to speed, here’s the sitch:

Back in April, rumors started spreading that Patrick Beverley was leaving the basketball team and was possibly considering transferring to the University of South Florida where former Hog coach Stan Heath was now running the show. Shortly afterwards, those rumors were put to rest.

Fast-forward to August 7th when more rumors started circulating that Beverley was out…again. This time, it seemed for real since the very next day, the University of Arkansas confirmed those rumors and we all shed a collective tear as realizations that both our football team and basketball teams were in for a rough, rough season.

But why? What did he do? Well, it didn’t take long for reports to start coming in that it was an academic issue. Or was it? A few days later, Beverley was quoted by FoxSports as saying, “It had nothing to do with academics.” In fact, he said he had “violated NCAA rules” and would pursue a pro-ball career overseas because he had just signed with sports agency BDA Sports. OK, fine. But what rules did he violate?

None, apparently.

And the business about the sports agency was also not true because he told The Sporting News Today’s Sean Deveney this afternoon that 1) he had not signed with an agent, 2) all of this ineligibility stuff was centered around an incident involving a school paper (so it was academic-related?) and 3), get this, he might come back to Arkansas! “My first choice is still to go back to Arkansas,” Beverley said. “I love that place, I love the whole state.” WTF, dude?

Citing privacy laws, the University of Arkansas still isn’t saying a word aside from the 34 it released on August 8th.

So here we sit, wondering with the rest of you guys. What the heck is going on? What’s the real story? And for Hog’s sake, when is this biznass gonna end?

Would someone please stand up and give us the straight-talk here? Someone besides Patrick Beverley?

The buzz on the Hog boards is that it is related to a paper his tutor wrote and turned in for him. Apparently she had also turned in the same paper to the same instructor the prevbious semester. The one year absence is a university imposed suspension. No NCAA violation involved.

I think we've learned by now that having Tutors do your work isn't an NCAA violation Very Happy

Some schools might not even suspend a player for that. Not mentioning any by name of course.
