On the heels of the events the last few weeks we've had a few things that have been good news for Alabama. Most of it, on the recruiting front and perhaps this post should be there instead of here but the context of this post covers more than just recruiting.
With the video conference coverage of the recruitment of William Ming and Gerald West I was impressed with the ability of our coaching staff to think out of the box. It's paying attention to some of the smallest details that have impressed me, recruits, other coaches visiting and I'm sure a lot of you guys. Finding this rule already passed by the NCAA was paying attention to the smallest details.
Let me go back a little further to get to the context of this post. No, let me go back A LOT further to set the stage.
After Coach Bryant passed one thing that really upset the members of the A-Club, former players, was the way they were treated by the Perkins and Curry staff's. It was as if their contributions on the field meant nothing to those two coaches and both were so intent in it being "their program" instead of the program of the University of Alabama any participation was shunned.
That changed with Coach Stallings. Once again, we had members of former teams involved in and around the program.
We all talk about football be cyclical. And, with the DuBose, Franchione and Shula era's that came true again. Former players felt shunned by these coaches.
If you recall, a few weeks ago Fernando Bryant spoke at our coaching clinic. One of the things that he mentioned was the fact he felt welcomed back at the University. He said he always loved Alabama, but it just didn't feel like home to him. But, with the hiring of Coach Saban and the way he treats the former players that had changed. "It is good to be home."
Bringing this all in context...
A few weeks ago when Coach Lance Thompson was visiting AJ McCarron he made the comment that the "great QB's at Bama wear the #12." AJ responded that "he wanted to be the next great quarterback to wear his own number." To which, Thompson replied "We can do that!"
Do you know what number AJ wears?
Number 10.
Coming full circle once again with former players involved with the program.
One former QB for Alabama made a trip down to Mobile Saturday to congratulate AJ and welcome him into the Crimson Tide family. That QB was Walter Lewis.
Care to guess what number that great QB wore and made into a legendary memory?
Coincidence? You be the judge.

Walter Lewis led the Tide to victory over Auburn in 1981, giving Bear Bryant career win #315. That moved Bear past Amos Alonzo Stagg for the most victories of all time (until Eddie Robinson eclipsed it).

He was a great one. Because of his great accuracy as a passer, along with his running ability, Lewis is the fourth greatest quarterback in Alabama history (in terms of total offensive output).

I think you're not wrong in your feelings Terry, and IMHO I think our staff need to put their maximum effort in that little things in terms of recruiting... mainly because of the last rules which ban head coches to recruit on the road during evaluation process, and as Ron Zook said, that's a big handicap for programs which are under rebuilding mode.

I can't agree more with all the info here...while I cannot comment on the shun of players during the Perkins and Curry years relative to the A Club as this was the period I was on campus. I can say that not much attention was afforded former players that showed up at practice besides the legends (Stabler, Namath, etc)...I cannot speak much first hand on A Club experiences thru the Stallings, Fran, Dubose, etc. years as I was unable to attend many games as I had started a family and lived several states and hours away...however, this past season I was able to frequently attend games and participate in pre-game activities sponsored by the A Club. I will say that I was welcomed and my past contributions to the Athletic Department were conveyed as appreciated.
